What Is A Subluxation?

Subluxation is the term used to describe what happens when one of the vertebrae, or bones, in your spine loses it's normal position. The word comes from two Latin; "sub"  meaning somewhat or slightly and "luxate" to dislocate. When this happens, the misaligned vertebra creates stress, tissue irritation and inflammation on the spinal nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding muscles. This pressure and stress can cause an disruption in the communication system(nerves) in your body's normal self regulating and self healing  processes as the nerves in the spinal column extend to the entire body and its organs. As time goes on and this condition is left uncorrected, the damage to the bones, tissues and nerves gets progressively worse.

Subluxations occur in any number of ways a car accident, fall, sudden jar, or trauma are examples of  instances that may cause a subluxation.  Subluxation can also come from regular actions such as poor sleeping position, poor posture, or incorrect lifting processes.

Chiropractic Doctors are specialists in locating, analyzing and correcting subluxations.  A chiropractor works to restore the misaligned vertebrae to their proper position in the spinal column. Chiropractors use  spinal adjustments to move the bones of your spine to a more normal position. Your chiropractor, in most cases, will use their hands to applying pressure to the spine in a specific location and direction. The adjustment force helps restore the alignment and range of motion of the vertebrae.   Chiropractic adjustments are usually painless. It is common to experience a sense of well being  following an adjustment due to the  decompression of the affected nerves.
